On September 11th, Ursula von der Leyen, the incoming European Commission President, presented her choice of the team and the new structure of the next European Commission, which is the only institution enabled to draft laws in the EU. The Commission is also responsible for executing EU rules and the bloc's treaties.
Once receiving the approval from the European Parliament, the EU's new top team will assume office on November 1st. Consisting of 13 female officers and 14 male members, the proposed team from President-elect von der Leyen will become the most gender-balanced executive team in EU history.
Mrs. von der Leyen listed several challenges to deal with, including fighting with climate change, further enhancing partnership with the US, establishing and maintaining the relationship with China, becoming a trustworthy neighbor to areas such as Africa. She also claimed that the EU would be the “guardian of multilateralism”, while some missions couldn’t be achieved by Europe alone.
