The National Hurricane Center (NHC) pointed out that Category 4 storm Hurricane Delta approached inland over southwestern Louisiana in the US, and then weakened to a Category 1 storm, after coming ashore near Creole, La.
This is the second hurricane to hit Louisiana over the last six weeks, after Laura struck ashore in August. Over 9,500 people are in shelters ahead of the hurricane in Louisiana.
According to the tracking website poweroutage.us, power was out in over 453,000 homes and businesses.
NHC stated that though the storm is estimated to weaken, people still need to be on the alert of the life-threatening storm.
Considering the total number of weather and climate disasters, 2020 has reached the record in 2011 and in 2017, resulting in more than $1 billion in losses. Besides the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, catastrophes happened this year have led to about sixteen billion-dollar losses, including hurricanes Laura and Sally and unduplicated wildfires across the West Coast.
