A bloody turf battle between the local Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the brutal Jalisco New Generation Cartel has erupted in Guanajuato. Thus, Guanajuato has become one of Mexico's most dominant organized crime groups and a cartel battleground.

On July 1, several gunmen jumped out of a truck and rushed into a drug rehabilitation center in Irapuato, Guanajuato, and forced people within the building to drop to the floor before shooting them. The attackers shot every male at the rehab center, letting only the females leave and unharmed. So far, authorities have not yet confirmed if any of these groups were involved in the attack. The massacre apparently was generated by organized crime that drug gangs appeared to have been involved in.

According to the authorities, the violence could be part of a fight over territory between rival criminal organizations, killing 26 men and gravely wounding 5 others. The state of Guanajuato, northwest of Mexico City, averages 12 homicides a day, has the highest murder rate nowadays in Mexico.
