Belgium, a country in Western Europe, is the headquarter of the European Union and NATO. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit hard on Belgium. As of April 28, the total number of COVID-19 infection cases in Belgium, since the beginning of the pandemic, rises to 47,334 and the number of death tolls reaches 7,331.

As a consequence of global Coronavirus lockdown, Belgium was reportedly to have piled up more than 750,000 tons of potatoes, estimated at €125 million worth, in the warehouse at the risk of rot.

The COVID-19 lockdown in Belgium and abroad has caused little consumption of potatoes, which is threatening the sales to restaurant chains and international trade. The worsening situation is putting the lives of potato farmers in hardship as well. A representative of Belgapom, the association for the Belgian potato trade and processing industry, has urged Belgians to eat fries twice a week to hopefully save those 750,000 tons of potatoes.
