China Approves Its State-Owned Covid-19 Vaccine for the Public

On December 31st 2020, China's National Health Commission announced that a coronavirus vaccine for public use from a Chinese pharmaceutical giant Sinopharm was approved. 

 

Chinese government promised to offer free inoculations to the general public. According to the health official, vulnerable groups could gain a prioritized order than general population. Significant groups have already been taking vaccines under emergency approvals, including around a million receiving the Sinopharm vaccine. 

 

Based on the interim analysis of Phase 3 clinical trials, the efficacy of the vaccine is 79.34%, in contrast to Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccines are said to be 95% effective. However, the Sinopharm vaccine has still surpassed the standard of World Health Organization (50%).
