France’s health officials announced the number of deaths from the Coronavirus had been up to 127 on March 15 and that more than 5,423 people were infected. Under such circumstances, amid the fear of the Coronavirus outbreak, fewer than half of voters in France appeared at the polls on March 15 for the national municipal elections. Although France’s government officials took special measures to keep voters within a safe distance and sanitized environment, it was reportedly the record low about 46% turnout to cast their ballots.

Poll clerks wore latex gloves and maintained a one-meter gap between voters in lines on marked out lanes with arrows on the floor. Hydroalcoholic gel, disinfectant wipes, or soap were provided for voting machines.

In particular, Paris mayoral elections adopt a 2-round system in its 17 districts of delegates. In the 1st round of local elections in the French capital on March 15, incumbent Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo, a Socialist, received 30% and was comfortably ahead of other candidates.

Prime Minister Édouard Philippe stated a decision would be made on whether to proceed or postpone the 2nd round on March 22 amid the worsening coronavirus outbreak.
