Death Toll Rises to 126 after 7.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tibet

The 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck at 9:05 a.m. local time on January 7 at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) and was followed by a series of aftershocks, according to the US Geological Survey.

 

More than 14,000 rescue workers have been deployed to Tibet to intensify efforts in searching for survivors of the recent earthquake. To date, over 400 people have been rescued. According to the state-owned People's Daily, more than 30,000 residents have been relocated to safer areas in the region.

 

A powerful earthquake was also felt in Nepal and parts of India. Officials indicate that more than 3,600 buildings collapsed. It reportedly killed at least 126 people in a remote area in western China.
