Germany Contemplates Mosque Tax to Avoid Foreign Funding

Among 16 states of Germany, several had backed “mosque tax” so as to curb the foreign funding for Muslim institutions from anti-democratic and radical sources. The federal government considered it "a possible path" and supported the idea that could mirror the Christian "church tax" in Germany.

Besides, concern has been growing about the impact of foreign funding sources on the country’s Muslim communities, since Germany is home to about five million Muslims. For example, the Turkish-Islamic Union of the Institute for Religion (DITIB) runs nearly 900 mosques in Germany, supported by the Turkish state.

Germany has even started to close mosques, which promoted militant and radical Islamist ideas.
