Girl Nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for Climate Strike

March15,2019

The "Global Climate Strike" initiated by Swedish girl, Greta Thunberg, sweeps the world. On March 15th, tens of thousands of students, at 2083 local places in 125 countries around the world, responded to "Global Climate Strike". Now, it has been a global event. On the eve of the "Global Climate Strike", Greta Thunberg was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

From last August, the 16-year-old Greta Thunberg sits alone outside the Swedish parliament every Friday to ask the Swedish government to face the issue of climate change. Taiwan's students have recently responded to this "Fridays for future". Their actions on climate change strikes express their concern and expectations for Taiwan's environmental issues and climate governance.

Many people advise Greta Thunberg to study hard and become a scientist to solve the climate change problem during her strikes. However, she believes that her growth speed cannot keep up with the climate change. She wonders when no one is working for the future crisis, why she should study for the disappearing future.

Greta Thunberg has become a worldwide leader in the climate movement. She delivers speeches at the UN Climate Change Conference, the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), TED. She strongly urges that more ambitious targets should be promoted to reduce carbon emissions.

On the eve of the March 15th event, a letter was issued, saying young people are concerned about the climate change. The letter also points out that human beings are the originators of the sixth mass extinction and that the global climate has reached a catastrophic crisis. However, the goal of the Paris agreement falls far behind. Young people, half of the world's population, no longer accept this injustice for the rest of their lives, so they will stand out. Through action, they call on politicians or adults to face the crisis of the climate change. Their positive actions firmly express that if we don’t do anything to stop climate change, there will be more wars, conflicts and refugees in the world.
