Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Huawei and also the daughter of its founder, has sued Canada for rights violations. The suit said that before Meng was told that she was arrested and allowed to access counsel, she had been detained, searched and then interrogated for hours.
When Meng was changing planes in Vancouver on December 1, 2018, she was arrested since the US accused her of conspiring to violate sanctions on Iran by deceiving banks about some business dealings of the company. After her detention, China also arrested two Canadians and sentenced a Canadian criminal to death although he had only been prisoned for smuggling drug.
China has requested Canada to release Meng again and again, but the Canadian government has refused, insisting the case is a legal matter instead of a political one. Meng is out on bail now and waiting for the extradition proceedings to start.
