The leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan, and the United States will gather in England on June 11 for the G7 summit. For the first time since the coronavirus outbreak began in early 2020, the G7 leaders are meeting. The three-day summit will cover a variety of topics, with a focus on how the G7 can lead the global recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to the G7 summit, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged G7 members to commit to immunizing the entire global population by the end of 2022. He also promised that the devastation caused by the coronavirus would never be repeated.
Meanwhile, the G7 Health Ministers met virtually on June 3 and 4 in Oxford, UK, to emphasize the importance of international health collaboration in the midst of a major worldwide coronavirus outbreak. One hundred former presidents, prime ministers, and foreign ministers have made an appeal to the Group of Seven countries to fund global coronavirus vaccinations in order to help prevent the virus from evolving and resurfacing as a global threat.
Thus, in a statement released ahead of the G7 summit, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson stated that he will urge his fellow G7 leaders to make clear promises to vaccinate the world and support the "Global Pandemic Radar," a new global surveillance system aimed at protecting immunization programs.
