Rice prices are soaring, and there is a serious shortage in Japan. The domestic rice market has been impacted by unfavorable weather and a surge in tourism. Foreign rice varieties are becoming more and more popular in Japan. As a result, foreign rice is becoming more widely available in supermarkets and dining establishments around the country.
In the past, Japan has opposed imports. Domestic prices have skyrocketed due to a significant lack of rice. Over the past year, domestic rice wholesale prices have increased by around 70%. However, Japanese businesses are willing to accept less expensive options. Long-standing agricultural policies are being changed by the trend.
Taiwanese rice and American Calrose are two more reasonably priced options that Japanese businesses and consumers are now taking into consideration. Trade talks with the United States may be impacted by this change. In light of present tariff negotiations with the United States, this incident may cause Japan to reevaluate its stringent import regulations.
