According to a spokesman of the New York Police Department, 66 climate change protesters were taken into custody on June 22 after they lay down on the Eighth Avenue and blocked traffic around the New York Times building.

These protesters from the group Extinction Rebellion were charged with disorderly behavior. They hung banners on the outside of the Port Authority Bus Terminal and on the skyscraper in midtown Manhattan. The protest was intended to draw attention to the way the media covered the climate change crisis.

The spokesperson for the group, Eve Mosher, stated that New York Times should take the lead to report the climate emergency like they treated World War II with headlines every day. In response, a spokesperson for New York Times said that no other news organization in US devoted more time and resources to reporting climate change.
