On June 2, Pope Francis visited Romania and expressed apology for the “discrimination, segregation and mistreatment” that the Roma people had suffered in the past. As a pontiff, Francis intended to play hatred down between people, hoping the relations between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches could be improved.
In a news conference when Francis flew back to Rome, he clearly expressed what he is meant for. He urged Catholics to pray for European unity whole-heartedly. He was worried about the future of the European Union and warned people to “learn from history,” not to “fall in the same hole.”
Francis’ speech brought great hope for the most oppressed minority in Europe, no matter in Paris or in Italy. He praised Romanians’ courage to endure racial discrimination or harsh mistreatment and eagerly reminded people to notice the fundamental human rights.
