Pope Francis held a meeting with Managing Director Kristalina Ivanova Georgieva-Kinova of the International Monetary Fund and finance ministers, including Argentine Minister of Economy Martin Guzman, across Latin American on February 5.

Pope Francis described there were repeated tax cuts for wealthy people, justified many times in the name of investment and development, given tax havens for private and corporate profits, and possibly linked to corruption by some of the largest global firms. Pope Francis called them structures of sin, often tied to the ruling political sector.

Meanwhile, Pope Francis urged hundreds of billions of tax money should be paid to finance medical care and education each year. In addition, Pope Francis stated poor people in heavily indebted countries were facing huge tax burdens and cuts in social services. Thus, the main message of Pope Francis is to put an end to tax cuts for the richest people.
