On January 21, 2019, Gambia's President Adama Barrow and Senegal's President Macky Sall jointly inaugurated the opening of the 942-meter long Senegambia Bridge over River Gambia near Farafenni, which links the two halves of Gambia and allows people from the north of Senegal to reach the southern Senegalese province of Casamance. The bridge, which began its construction in 2015 at the cost of $65 million, was funded by the African Development Bank.

People celebrated the toll bridge which opens for cars and will allow trucks and other heavy vehicles in July. Previously, people either had to take unreliable ferry crossing or traveled some 400-kilometer detour from one end to another. The Senegambia Bridge plays an important role in the promotion of business and travel in West Africa.
