South Dakota Attorney General Was Convicted on 2 Impeachment Charges and Dismissed from Office
South Dakota Senate Found Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg Guilty Related to A 2020 Car Accident
The South Dakota Senate found Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg guilty of two impeachment allegations related to a car accident in 2020 in which he killed a pedestrian on June 21, resulting in his immediate dismissal.
Jason Ravnsborg claimed on September 12, 2020, that he hit what he thought was a deer while driving home at night and did not realize it was a person until the next day. Despite objections from all sides, Ravnsborg insisted on his innocence in the death of Joseph Boever, 55.
The House voted to impeach him in April. On June 21, the Senate found Ravnsborg guilty of fatal offenses as well as a misdemeanor charge of misleading law enforcement and abusing his position of authority. Ravnsborg was also barred from holding any future governmental office by a unanimous vote of the parliament. Governor Kristi Noem, who supported Ravnsborg's impeachment, will be named as his replacement.
