Technologies Help 3.4 Billion People in the Rural Improve Lives

According to 2021 World Social Report published by the United Nation on May 20th, around 3.4 billion people residing in outlying areas can benefit from advanced Internet access and connectivity, making them possible to improve the standard of living and to get better jobs without urban migration.

 

Based on the report titled “Reconsidering Rural Development”, released by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), people who live in rural areas have fewer opportunities to gain essential services, such as education and health; meanwhile, women, the old and indigenous people in the countryside keep facing prejudice in the field of land rights and employment.

 

Even though the COVID-19 pandemic terrorize people’s live, the report showed how technologies assist to create new opportunities for remote areas’ development, and open up a greener, more inclusive and resilient future, according to UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
