US President Donald Trump signed the declaration to recognize the Israel’s territory over the Golan Heights.
This action broke the international law which had been practiced for decades. International law referred that the territory occupied during the war should be returned. After President Donald Trump’s declaration, the prime minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed this international law was not given.
President Trump stated that this move would intensify the ability of Jewish’s state to defend the threat from external power and also reach the peace at the boarder of Arab-Israel. President Trump also gave a boost for Mr. Netanyahu’s election.
However, leaders of many foreign countries did not agree on this declaration. Syria and Lebanon blamed the action. Besides, at least two NATO members, Canada and Turkey, disagreed with this move.
Syria disputed that the move of the United States was an aggressive action on its integration of territory and sovereignty. Lebanon stated that the Golan Heights was the territory of “Syria and Arab” and no country can disprove the history to transfer the land from one country to another.
Saudi Arab also stated the disagreement on President Trump’s stance over the issues of Golan Heights in the press. Saudi Arab denounced the United States for destroying the peace of the Middle East.
Golan Height was part of Syria before 1967. It was captured by Israel during the Six Day war. Mr. Baker, a co-author of a 2012 government report, indicated that according to the international law, no one can acquire a territory based on an act of war, and that a negotiation or an agreement would be needed with the previous sovereign.
The Prime Minister of Israel visited the United States for three days but he announced on March 25 that he would leave early to deal with these critics.
