President Donald Trump issued an executive order on March 19 directing the Department of Education to cease operations. It can eventually be closed, as President Trump promised during his campaign.

According to the White House, the Federal education bureaucracy has failed American children, teachers, and families. The order directs Education Secretary Linda McMahon to begin dismantling the Education Department. In the end, the States may and ought to regain control of the Department of Education's primary responsibilities.

Congress established the Education Department in 1979 during President Jimmy Carter’s administration. Since the Education Department was established by statute, a congressional act would be necessary to completely abolish it.
