The cab-aggregating giant Uber declared to lay off 600 full time employees in India on May 26th, about a quarter of Uber India and South Asia’s employee base. So far, Uber has cut 6,700 positions due to the impact of Covid-19 and the pressure from the unpredictable nature of the recovery.

Although earlier this month, Uber continued its ride hailing services in around 50 cities; much of them are still under lockdown since March 25th.

In addition to Uber, its competitor in India Ola announced to cut 1,400 local jobs last week, for the pandemic is affecting its revenues.

Pradeep Parameswaran, president of Uber India and South Asia, apologized for the dismissal, and added that Uber will provide 10 weeks of pay and six months of medical insurance for the unemployed staff.
