On September 17, the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) released a report, named the International Migrant Stock 2019, in new data of international migrants, which estimated reliable statistics of foreign populations gathered from official national censuses.
According to DESA’s newly released data, the total number of migrants reached 272 million globally in 2019, increasing by 51 million since 2010, which comprised 3.5% of the world’s population, by comparison, it was 2.8% in 2000.
DESA defines anyone who changes the country of usual residence as a migrant. US, Germany, and Saudi Arabia making up the top 3 nations of destination favored by international migrants. Some observers believed migrants make contributions to both host countries and countries of origin, includes sending valuable remittances back to countries of origin and a major social innovation through the transmission of ideas.
