The United Nations Summit on Biodiversity was held in New York City by the President of the General Assembly on September 30, at the level of Heads of State and Government under the theme of “Urgent action on biodiversity for sustainable development”. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the Summit ascertained that responses to the pandemic provide a unique opportunity for transformative change as a global community and further highlighted the importance of harmony between people and nature.

Besides the UN’s 75th anniversary, the topics of the Summit include the start of the UN decade of action and delivery on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the UN Decades on ecosystem restoration and on ocean science for sustainable development, etc. Moreover, they remind us that people are in urgent need of  a healthy environment and transformative change.

The UN Summit on biodiversity is a chance for all governments to demonstrate leadership and commitment to improve the relationship between human being and nature. Over 100 heads of state and government at the online event get ready to struggle for the development of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework. They realize that biodiversity is the key factor for sustainable development and the struggle against climate change.
