On July 13, “The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2020 (SOFI 2020)” report was released by the United Nations. The SOFI 2020 report, presented by 5 UN bodies including the Food and Agriculture Organization on the United Nations, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the United Nations Children's Fund, World Food Programme, and the World Health Organization, offered the most reliable data of the extent of food insecurity, hunger, and malnutrition around the world.
In particular, the SOFI 2020 report included a special focus on transforming food systems for affordable healthy diets. According to the annual report, economic slowdowns and climate-related shocks have globally been pushing more people into hunger.
Meanwhile, the UN estimated that almost 690million people, or 8.9% of people around the globe, went hungry in 2019. Amid the COVID-19 spreading throughout the world with the coronavirus pandemic worsening, the SOFI 2020 report stated one in nine people in the world are going hungry. The UN warned Coronavirus pandemic and locust swarms set to threaten the global food system even worse.
