In the morning on February 4, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a speech delivered his view of the world's current state of affairs. The majority in the UN chief's speech was described various challenges on Earth’s worsening climate conditions. Guterres mentioned the world's ocean temperatures and the mean sea level had both reached new record highs. In addition, Guterres pointed out 2 key factors, which are shrinking permafrost and thawing tundra, had been sending vast amounts of methane into the atmosphere. Guterres also referred to carbon emissions in the smoke from Australia’s massive fire as a vicious circle to the climate.

Nevertheless, Guterres praised that more people have been aware of the risks posed by climate change and welcome governments and the private sector to direct their policies and investing money in environmental protection.

Guterres warned a wind of madness is currently sweeping the world. Humanity faces unpredictable and violent conflicts that indicate the world is threatened by growing global instability. UN Secretary-General particularly pointed out conflicts and tensions in Libya, Syria, and Yemen are becoming more uncontrollable with an intensive risk of miscalculation. While the UN is ready to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2020, Guterres urges all UN's member nations to push for a surge of diplomacy for peace.
