On July 1, the United Nations Security Council unanimously passed a resolution that demands a humanitarian 90-day cease-fire in global conflict zones due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The resolution 2532 on the COVID-19 pandemic, which was introduced by France and Tunisia, called for all parties of armed conflicts to engage an immediate cessation of hostilities in conflict zones for at least 90 consecutive days around the world due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is the first UN resolution related to the coronavirus crisis that the Security Council has endorsed, but military operations against ISIS and al-Qaida are excluded, which will pertain to the conflicts in Congo, Libya, South Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.
The UN Secretary-General welcomed the long-awaited worldwide ceasefire, calling for countries to redouble their efforts in combating the coronavirus pandemic for peace.
