UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held a policy briefing on the Impact of COVID-19 on Food Security and Nutrition on June 9 and called for immediate action to avoid a global food emergency amid COVID-19 pandemic. Guterres said the COVID-19 pandemic has made things worse since about 820 million people are chronically food insecure (hungry) and more than 144 million children under the age of 5 are stunted.<-- Instagram
Under the Impact of COVID-19 pandemic, the world's food systems are failing for feeding 7.8 billion people. The world’s food systems are failing and the Covid-19 pandemic is making things worse. The UN Secretary-General warned immediate action to be taken to shore up global food security and avoid 50 million more people into extreme poverty.
Secretary-General Guterres described food and nutrition services are essential to avert the food crisis. Secretary-General pointed out millions were already grappling with hunger and malnutrition before the pandemic. In addition, the UN chief emphasized preserving critical humanitarian food, livelihood, and nutrition assistance to vulnerable groups., the Secretary-General called for transforming food systems to achieve a more inclusive and sustainable world.
