While appearing on NBC's "Meet The Press" on May 9, Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, commented that there is no doubt the US has undercounted the death tolls in COVID-19 disease.

The new study from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2007, estimated 905,000 Americans may have died from COVID-19 at a substantially higher number than the official tally of 577,000 deaths. During his interview on NBC's "Meet the Press", Dr. Fauci agreed to the COVID-19 deaths revealed in IHME's study and confirmed the actual number of people who have died of COVID-19 is higher than the numbers reported by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Acting as President Joe Biden’s top medical advisor, Dr. Fauci also addressed the need for Americans to get vaccinated so as to help prevent another COVID surge in the near future. Meanwhile, Dr. Fauci emphasized the importance of wearing masks and credited their use as a seasonal item to avoid the spread of coronavirus and other respiratory diseases.
