On April 8th, India's richest municipal corporation, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued a weekend lockdown in Mumbai until further orders because of a severe rise in Covid-19 cases.

The active caseload of India reached 9,10,319 on April 8th, among which 1,26,789 were new cases in the last 24 hours. Amid 56,286 new Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, 8,938 cases were reported in Mumbai.

However, numerous migrant laborers in Mumbai were seen coming back to their native places, due to their panic of an upcoming lockdown and not being able to earn a living.
