According to the latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO), it took 67 days from the 1st infection case of COVID-19 to reach 100,000 confirmed cases around the world and 11 days to 200,000 cases. But it took simply 4 days to reach 300,000 infection cases.
The WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus spoke in Geneva on March 23 about the global Coronavirus crisis and warned the Coronavirus pandemic is accelerating around the world. The Director-General called for political commitments and coordination among countries with aggressive and targeted tactics to solve shortages of life-saving tools worldwide, including surgical masks for health workers. In addition, Dr. Tedros urged people to stay home and follow social distancing measures in order to reduce the spread of the Coronavirus.
Meanwhile, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the US all reported new death tolls and infection cases. These governments have subsequently imposed different levels of lockdowns to limit the Coronavirus outbreak in their countries.
Under such circumstances, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) President and the Prime Minister of Japan announced the decision on March 24 that the 2020 Olympics, which were scheduled to commence on July 24 in Tokyo, have been postponed until summer 2021 in order to avoid the risk from coronavirus pandemic to the health of the athletes.
