On July 23rd, a massive wildfire that started from July 22nd in Kechries, over 50 miles south-west of Athens, kept raging in southern Greece, compelling seven villages and two camps to withdraw. The fire led to 10 houses destroyed and 1 fireman injured slightly.
Over 300 firefighters dealt with the flame, with 10 helicopters and 10 water-dropping planes supporting.
According to the Fire Service, 72 forest fires broke out across Greece starting from the evening on July 22nd, most of which were rapidly quenched.
It’s common to find wildfires break out in Greece’s hot and parched summers. A strong fire in 2018 damaged the seaside hot spot of Mati, east of Athens, making 102 people dead. In addition, a strong blaze in southern and central Greece left around 80 people dead.
