According to cases in the worst-affected countries China and Italy, researchers at Imperial College London have discovered the likelihood of being infected with Coronavirus is mostly older people. The data estimated that only 5% of under-40s require critical care in the hospital. By contrast, 70% of infected people in their 60s and above need hospitalized for critical care. Meanwhile, the average age of people in the UK receives critical care units is 63. The US's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also reported 53% of those people hospitalized for intensive care are over 55 years old.
However, Dr. Leslie A. Enane at Indiana University School of Medicine and the Riley Hospital called for global attention to younger people. Although adolescents and youth are experiencing more mild or moderate infections during the outbreak in COVID-19, after years of
comprehensive children’s health care in tuberculosis (TB), the world’s death tolls are more than 4,000 each day and 1.5 million people died of TB annually. Thus, experts warned against overlooking the youngsters in the Coronavirus pandemic.
Dr. Deborah Leah Birx, who was appointed as the Response Coordinator for the White House Coronavirus Task Force as of March 2020, had also spoken out the importance of millennials to avoid large gatherings. Dr. Birx stated the US government would look to adolescents and youth to advocate for the solutions and bring an end to Coronavirus pandemic.
