According to data recorded from John Hopkins University thus far, there have been 267 confirmed COVID-19 infection cases in Zambia, with 7 deaths and 117 recoveries. However, Zambia has recorded more than 76 COVID-19 cases in Nakonde, which is located at the North-Eastern part of the Muchinga Province and is the exit to East Africa through Tunduma, Tanzania.

In March, the Zambia government had closed schools as part of efforts to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the increasing Coronavirus infection cases in Nakonde, Zambia shut down its border with Tanzania on May 11. Sex workers in Nakonde were also reportedly helping the Zambia government to trace infected patients.

Earlier, President Edgar Lungu announced the reopening of casinos, gyms, and restaurants which have been shut down to keep social distancing measures since March. On May 8, he also addressed that both primary and secondary schools would reopen on June 1.
