Iranian, S. Korean Scientists Present Simple, Cost-Effective Method to Produce Graphene

July 16th, 2015

Researchers from Iran and South Korea succeeded in the presentation of a simple and economic method for the synthesis of graphene.

This method significantly decreases the time of the synthesis process.
No simple and economic method has yet been presented to produce this product. In this research, a simple and innovative method was used to overcome some serious problems in the production of graphene. This method reduces the time and production cost but also provides the opportunity to produce graphene at a large scale.
The difficulty in the washing of graphene oxide due to its severe hydrophilicity is the most important challenge in the production of graphene through oxidation method. Therefore, this process requires highly expensive devices at low capacity such as high rotary speed centrifuges. This fact puts limitation on the production capacity and increases the price of the final product.
In this research, a simple method was used in which ultrasonic waves are used as well as oxidation process. This way, all the graphite oxidizes and the process time decreases significantly. In addition, graphene oxide is reduced before being washed in the presence of oxidants, which decreases hydrophilicity and results in the ease of washing. Therefore, the production time decreases as the method to wash reduced graphene changes, and it can be produced at a large scale.
