Apple momentarily disables its newly announced artificial intelligence tool that summarizes news notifications after repeatedly providing consumers with incorrect headlines. Apple announced on January 16 that the software will be stopped while the company worked on enhancements.

The system generates false or fraudulent summaries of news headlines that appear almost comparable to regular push alerts. One of the most heinous headlines falsely claimed that Luigi Mangione, the man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, had shot himself.

On January 16, Apple sent out a beta software upgrade to developers that disabled the AI capacity for news and entertainment headlines. Apple's incorrect AI news has provoked criticism from news organizations and press freedom advocates. The company plans to re-enable the feature in a future version. Apple plans to make AI capabilities available to all consumers in the future while continuing to improve them.
