In Ecuador's presidential election, incumbent Daniel Noboa declared a landslide victory on April 13. His "iron fist" approach to the widespread violence by cartels was supported by voters. The National Election Council declared that Noboa had an unbeatable 12-point lead over his leftist opponent Luisa Gonzalez, with more than 90% of the votes collected.
Gonzalez seemed taken aback by her lackluster performance. She questioned the outcome right away. "The most grotesque electoral fraud" was what she accused Noboa of, and she demanded a ballot recount.
Concerns about cartel violence and the weak economy dominated the campaign. Voters responded favorably to Noboa's position on fighting organized crime in the face of the nation's security crisis. With the victory, Noboa is expected to strengthen his strong security stance and growing friendship with US President Donald Trump.
