US President Donald Trump signed an order doubling import duties on steel and aluminum from 25% to 50% across all nations. In one of President Trump's presidential actions, "ADJUSTING IMPORTS OF ALUMINUM AND STEEL INTO THE UNITED STATES," the White House declared it.
As a result, the official announcement read, "Accordingly, I have determined that it is necessary and appropriate to increase the tariff rate for imports of steel articles and derivative steel articles, and aluminum articles and derivative aluminum articles, from 25 percent ad valorem to 50 percent ad valorem effective as of 12:01 a.m. eastern daylight time on June 4, 2025.”
Canada is the top supplier of steel and aluminum to the United States. "Unlawful and unjustified" is how Canada's Prime Minister's Office (PMO) described the new steel and aluminum tariffs. The United Kingdom is the only nation for which the higher tariffs will not impact; its rates will stay at 25%.
