On February 25, a power blackout plunged most of Chile into darkness. Chile's President Gabriel Boric has proclaimed a state of emergency, which includes the capital Santiago.

Nineteen million people, or 98 percent of the population, were left without electricity due to the nationwide power outage. Streetlights went out and subway trains stopped operating, causing traffic congestion during the blackout.

According to the agency responsible for Chile's electrical grid, a transmission system disconnect in the Norte Chico region was the reason for the power outage. To help keep the peace, Interior Minister Carolina Toha said it was sending the military throughout the nation. Much of the country is under a curfew until February 26 morning at six o'clock.
