Google has officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico for its American consumers. Google Maps now shows the "Gulf of America" instead of the "Gulf of Mexico" for US web and mobile users.
The Gulf is bounded by the United States, Cuba, and Mexican territory. It comes after President Donald Trump directed that the body of water be renamed in US government records.
The Geographic Names Information System, a US government database managed by the Interior Department, has reported an update to the Gulf's name. As a result, Google applied the change on February 10.
Users in Mexico will continue to see "Gulf of Mexico". Meanwhile, the rest of the world will see the previous name, with "Gulf of America" in parentheses.
