This year, provinces such as Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha could have 10 to 11 heatwave days, according to Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, chief of the India Meteorological Department, who spoke at a press conference on April 14.
The maximum temperature is expected to reach 41°C on April 16, rising to 42°C on April 17 and 18. It predicts more intense hot conditions in the following days. That's equivalent to living in Death Valley, North America. Summer daytime temperatures often reach similar levels.
Summer heatwaves have arrived early in India and Pakistan, scaring hundreds of millions of people. Extreme heatwaves are pushing survival limits and putting a strain on energy supply, vital crops, and livelihoods.
