On February 4th, Moroccan rescuers raced against the clock to save a five-year-old young boy who had been stranded for nearly three days in a 32-meter deep well. The rescue effort has engulfed the nation, with hundreds of thousands of people watching live broadcasts with bated breath.
Since the evening of February 1st, the boy has been trapped in the well in the northern village of Ighran in Morocco's Chefchaouen province. On February 3rd, rescuers leveraged a rope to reach the youngster and give him an oxygen tube and water, but they were unable to reach the pit where he was stuck. They also sent down a surveillance camera to keep an eye on him.
Thousands of Moroccans expressed their commiserations to the boy and his family on social media. The hashtag #SaveRayan has been trending in Morocco for hours and spreading across North Africa, including neighboring Algeria. Twitter posts have also drawn international attention to the rescue efforts.
