NASA astronauts Anne McClain, commander, and Nichole Ayers, pilot, along with mission specialists JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Takuya Onishi and Roscosmos cosmonaut Kirill Peskov, continue prelaunch operations at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The crew members are undergoing spacesuit checks inside the Astronaut Crew Quarters, where they have quarantined since March 7. Suit technicians helped the crew put on the SpaceX suits, perform unpressurized and pressurized leak checks, and lock the helmets in place. The 3D helmets are customized for each crew member and house microphones for communication and valves that regulate the suit’s pressure systems.
The outer layer of the of the suit is made with flame resistant materials. The gloves are designed for flexibility to use when the suit is pressurized and to operate the SpaceX Dragon’s computer touchscreens leading up to and during flight. The gloves have zippers on the wrist in case astronauts need their bare hands to operate the controls. Each seat during suit checks is configured to the same seats inside the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.
Once suit checks are complete, the crew will play the traditional card game. The type of game varies, but the goal remains the same – the commander, Anne McClain, must lose so the team gets rid of all the bad luck and only good luck remains for the launch.
