US President Donald Trump levied a 25% import tax on all steel and
aluminum. The tariffs will take effect on March 12.
Tariffs will drive up the cost of importing metals into the United States. But Trump has maintained that his initiatives will boost domestic production. The president added, "Our country requires steel and
aluminum to be manufactured in America, not in foreign lands."
The United States is the world's largest importer of steel. The United States' top three suppliers are Canada, Brazil, and Mexico. More than half of US aluminum imports come from Canada. Trump has claimed that he believes import fees will help the nation close its budget deficit.
