On December 20th, web security firm Cloudfare released a tech research, Top Domains Ranking in 2021, revealing that TikTok has surpassed Google, last year's top favorite, to become the most popular site in 2021.

Throughout the year, TikTok and Google battled for the top position, and Google prevailed in October and November, but the video-driven social media app ultimately outperformed Google.com, including Maps, Translate, Photos, Flights, Books, and News on holidays such as Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

Based on Cloudfare’s analysis, over 1 billion people use TikTok on a monthly basis, with many of them being youngsters and teenagers. The platform has also played a key role in the careers of some of today's most well-known musicians, such as Lil Nas X.

According to Cloudfare, in 2021, Facebook came in third, after TikTok came in first and Google came in second. Microsoft and Apple rounded out the top five. Amazon was ranked sixth, followed by Netflix,  YouTube, Twitter, and WhatsApp, which was ranked tenth.
