On December 24th, the Indian cabinet has sanctioned funds for updating the NPR (National Population Register), a census and a population survey to be commenced in next year.

According to Minister of Information and Broadcasting Prakash Javadekar, Indian government had appropriated 39.4 billion rupees ($553 million; £427 million) for the NPR and that it would be conducted from April to September in 2020. Besides, another 87.54 billion rupees will be allocated on the census, to collect some statistics on population, economic activity, migration and demography, etc.

On the other hand, critics claim the NPR will be a list doubting whether the citizens are Indian. Hundreds of thousands of Indians came to protest, since they believe the law and NPR would be used against the Muslim minority.
