UN Special Representative Calls for Peace in Afghanistan

Mr. Tadamichi Yamamoto is currently the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan. An official report was published openly by the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on December 26. In the statement by UN Special Representative Tadamichi Yamamoto on need for peace in Afghanistan, Mr. Yamamoto first reiterated the UN's commitment to supporting an inclusive Afghan-led process to uphold human rights and achieve sustainable peace.

 

Mr. Yamamoto revealed the war in Afghanistan with an appalling toll on civilians. The statistic figures in UNAMA systematic documentations had shown civilian casualties surpassed 100,000 in the past 10 years. Mr. Yamamoto urged everyone to raise their voices for peace and make genuine and concrete peace processes to end the war.

 

The UN mission chief encouraged all stakeholders to participate in all peace efforts to a lasting political settlement and a permanent ceasefire. Mr. Yamamoto concluded only by ending the war in Afghanistan could lead to real hope for a prosperous future for Afghanistan.
